Theme Final Draft:
I am in my third semester of ceramics. I enjoy coming to class everyday, and learning new things. My projects used to be small, and lopsided, but over the weeks, I have learned to throw a bit bigger, and also neater. It was hard at first, but when you like to do something, it's easier to improve and put the time in. I am taking AP Ceramics next year, and i hope to improve even more, and grow on my ideas. It's always a lot of fun to let my creativity out, and try new things.
My theme this semseter was shape. Previously, my projects had complex designs, with a simple shape. i wasn't very good at making them the right shapes, or even something interesting. I needed improvement in this area. So I took on the challenge, because I firmly believe that when a skill is lacking, you can't ignore it. You have to keep practicing. I wasn't sure what to do at first, but eventually, it all came to me.
I made four projects that related to my theme. The first two were similar. It was a vase, and a cylinder. These projects took an interesting shape to them. They had a lot of ridges and curves. The only way to really describe them is to say they were "wavy". The cylinder, which I made first, was tall. It had a lip that kind of overflowed over it. I glazed it with white, and a hint of green. The vase, is short, and the waves really add to the shape of it. I glazed this one dark blue. The third one, was a bowl with a flowered lip. I accomplished this by pressing the lip in while it was still wet in five different places.
These all take up my theme, because they are shapes that are not normally used in projects. Shape isn't just about having the right, or perfectly formed project. It is about expierementing with new ideas. The shape makes the project. it is what takes a cylinder, and makes it a mug, or a short fat cylinder, and makes it a bowl. Glaze is used a lot of the time to emphasize the shape as well. If your project takes on a complex form, then you want a simple glaze so that it doesn't overwhelm the project. Last semster my theme was detail, so they shapes were all simple, with complex detail. I did the opposite this semester so that I could come up with new ideas, and ways to accomplish them.
I like how these projects turned out. I was able to have more practice with shape, so now as I continue ceramics, I can continue to improve on it. I would like to be able to dig deeper into this theme, and really explore some new forms. I didn't really believe it until I saw it, but shape really does make the project!

My biggest strengths in creamics were probably building up my project, and getting the size right. I didn't have much trouble pulling up the walls. Most of my projects were round, and vases or bowls. I think this is because I liked the round shape. Next semester my main goal is to find better ways to glaze. Also, to make my footing better. Right now my projects stand anywhere from 5-10 inches. Next semester I hope to raise that up to a foot. By the end of the semster my projects should be taller, straighter, and better balanced. Also I wil give them shape.
THEME: Shape
My theme was shape. I chose this theme because it was something that I thought that all of my projects needed a bit more of. Most of my vases, bowls, and cylinders lacked shape. They all were pretty straight and boring. Of course, shape is also something that you can do a lot of. To accomplish this goal, I made two projects. The first one was a rounded bowl, with a flowered top. I pushed the top of the rim with my finger while it was still wet. This allowed it to have a shape that was different and unique. It was also something I had never tried before. My second project was a vase with three curves. It had a wave like shape to it. I did this by choking it several times, instead of once like the average vase. This theme helped me explore new techniques to add originality to my projects.
What:
-Shape
How
-Use my rib tool to add shape to my projects like waves or curves
-Glaze projects to add to the shape
-Choke in different places
Why:. I wanted to simplify glaze, and emphasize the project itself.
Where:
-On my bowl, I added a wavy top
-I made a vase that has waves along the size
-A cylinder that also has waves
